FIFA World Cup 2026: France vs Morocco Preview, Team News, Predicted Lineups & Prediction

France and Morocco renew their rivalry in a blockbuster FIFA World Cup 2026 quarter-final, with a place in the last four at stake. Les Bleus arrive as one of the tournament favourites after a flawless run through the competition, while Morocco continue to inspire as Africa's last remaining representative, hoping to make more history.

Match Preview

France have looked every bit like title contenders throughout the tournament, winning all five of their matches on the way to the quarter-finals. Didier Deschamps' side topped Group I before eliminating Sweden and Paraguay in the knockout rounds.

The Round of 16 clash against Paraguay proved to be France's toughest challenge so far. A disciplined Paraguayan defence frustrated Les Bleus for long spells before captain Kylian Mbappe converted a decisive penalty to seal a narrow victory. Despite that close encounter, France have scored 13 goals in five matches, showcasing one of the most dangerous attacks in the tournament.

Mbappe has been brilliantly supported by Ousmane Dembele, Michael Olise and Bradley Barcola, while youngster Desire Doue continues to impress with his creativity and composure. Doue won the crucial penalty against Paraguay after another outstanding individual display.

Veteran coach Didier Deschamps, who will step down after the tournament, is enjoying another remarkable World Cup campaign. France have now won 11 of their last 12 competitive matches and are currently on a seven-match winning streak. Thursday's encounter will mark Deschamps' 25th World Cup match as manager, drawing level with Helmut Schön's long-standing record.

France also have positive memories of Boston, where they comfortably defeated Norway 4-1 earlier in the competition, and they will be aiming to book another semi-final appearance.

Morocco, meanwhile, continue to write history for African football. After reaching the semi-finals at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the Atlas Lions have once again produced a memorable campaign and remain unbeaten in their last five World Cup matches.

Mohamed Ouahbi's side finished second in Group C before knocking out the Netherlands on penalties and then producing an impressive 3-0 victory over co-hosts Canada in the Round of 16.

After a slow first half against Canada, Azzedine Ounahi scored twice after the break before substitute Soufiane Rahimi added a late third to seal an emphatic victory.

Morocco have now gone 10 consecutive matches unbeaten across all competitions since their controversial Africa Cup of Nations final defeat in January. However, France represent their biggest challenge yet.

History is also against the Atlas Lions. Morocco have never defeated France inside 90 minutes, losing four of their previous six meetings. Their only previous World Cup encounter came in the 2022 semi-finals, where France claimed a 2-0 victory.

Team News

France captain Kylian Mbappe continues to dominate the headlines after scoring his seventh goal of the tournament against Paraguay. The Real Madrid superstar is level with Lionel Messi and Erling Haaland in the Golden Boot race and has now scored 19 career FIFA World Cup goals.

Didier Deschamps is expected to stick with the same starting XI that has served him well throughout the tournament.

Manu Kone is likely to continue in midfield after replacing Aurelien Tchouameni, who remains doubtful with a thigh injury. Marcus Thuram is also unavailable through injury.

For Morocco, Bayern Munich midfielder Ismael Saibari remains the biggest injury concern after suffering a hamstring problem during the victory over Canada.

Soufiane Rahimi could once again start in attack if Saibari fails to recover in time, while defender Chadi Riad will need to prove his fitness after being substituted in the previous match.

Creative playmaker Brahim Diaz has been one of Morocco's standout performers, registering four World Cup assists—the most by any African player in tournament history—and contributing 10 goal involvements for his national team this year.

Key Players to Watch

Kylian Mbappe (France):
The France captain has been unstoppable throughout the tournament. With seven goals already, Mbappe possesses the pace, finishing ability and leadership to decide another major knockout match.

Brahim Diaz (Morocco):
Morocco's chief creator continues to shine on the biggest stage. His vision, movement and ability to unlock compact defences will be vital if the Atlas Lions are to cause another upset.

Match Prediction

Morocco have once again demonstrated tremendous defensive discipline, resilience and attacking quality, but France appear to be peaking at exactly the right time. Les Bleus possess greater squad depth, superior attacking firepower and vast experience in World Cup knockout matches.

The Atlas Lions are capable of making life difficult, yet France's individual brilliance—particularly through Mbappe—should prove decisive.

Prediction: France 2-1 Morocco
