FIFA World Cup 2026: Scotland vs Brazil Preview, Team News & Prediction

Scotland Dream of Historic Upset Against Brazil

Scotland will attempt to secure one of the biggest victories in their football history when they face five-time world champions Brazil in their final Group C match at the FIFA World Cup 2026 on Wednesday.

With qualification for the knockout stages still within reach, Steve Clarke's side know that a positive result against the Selecao could be enough to book their place in the last 32. Brazil, meanwhile, are aiming to finish top of the group and continue their pursuit of a sixth World Cup crown.

Match Preview

Scotland began their World Cup campaign with an impressive 1-0 victory over Haiti before suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat against Morocco in their second group match. Ismael Saibari's early strike proved decisive, although Scotland produced a determined second-half display and felt unfortunate not to receive a penalty.

Despite the setback, Scotland remain firmly in contention for qualification. A victory over Brazil would guarantee a top-two finish, while even a draw could be enough to see them progress depending on other results.

History, however, is not on Scotland's side. The Tartan Army have never beaten Brazil, losing six and drawing two of their previous eight meetings. Their last three World Cup encounters with the South Americans all ended in defeat.

Brazil enter the contest with confidence after a convincing 3-0 victory over Haiti. Following an opening 1-1 draw against Morocco, Carlo Ancelotti's men responded in style thanks to a brace from Matheus Cunha and another goal from Vinicius Junior.

The victory highlighted Brazil's attacking strength and placed them in a commanding position in Group C. A win against Scotland would secure first place regardless of other results.

Although Brazil are among the favourites to win the tournament, they will be wary of underestimating Scotland. The Selecao have suffered surprise group-stage defeats in the past, most recently against Cameroon at the 2022 World Cup.

Team News

Scotland have a few injury concerns heading into this crucial encounter. Scott McKenna, Aaron Hickey and Lewis Ferguson all missed recent training sessions, but there remains hope that each player could be available for selection.

Steve Clarke is expected to continue with a disciplined defensive setup designed to frustrate Brazil's attacking stars. John McGinn and Scott McTominay are likely to provide the creative spark behind striker Che Adams.

For Brazil, Raphinha has been ruled out after sustaining a hamstring injury during the victory over Haiti. Young winger Rayan is expected to replace him on the right side of attack.

There is also positive news regarding Neymar, who has recovered from injury and is available for selection. However, the veteran forward is unlikely to start, with Lucas Paqueta expected to operate behind Vinicius Junior and Matheus Cunha.

Players to Watch

Scott McTominay (Scotland)
The Manchester United midfielder remains Scotland's biggest goal threat from midfield and will be crucial both defensively and offensively.

Vinicius Junior (Brazil)
The Real Madrid superstar looked sharp against Haiti and will be Brazil's main attacking weapon with Raphinha unavailable.

Match Prediction

Scotland have shown tremendous spirit throughout the tournament and are capable of making life difficult for Brazil. However, the South Americans possess significantly more quality throughout the squad and should have enough firepower to secure victory.

Prediction: Scotland 0-2 Brazil

Brazil's attacking talent and tournament experience are expected to prove decisive, although Scotland should make the favourites work hard for all three points.
